As a general rule, structured wiring includes “ALL” wiring in the home that does not carry high voltage. Wiring included under our low volt 06 license includes wire for networks, cable TV, HVAC, security, low voltage lighting, fiber and optical, stranded speaker wire, and equipment interconnects (A/V cables).
Most structured wiring terminates in a metal enclosure located in the garage or service closet. A structured wiring enclosure should be large enough to support all the equipment required to reside within it, and all the equipment and wiring inside should be secure, organized and well maintained. From our experience the majoring of structured wiring and wire management enclosures we find in the average home are nothing less than a big mess.
06 Low voltage electricians belong to a unique specialty trade devoted to structured wiring and functionality derived from structured wire. Although a standard 01 licensed electrician has the authority to pull permit and run structured wiring along with high voltage wires in your home, you may want to reconsider that option. Structured wiring is a unique field of expertise and requires several unique skill sets your standard electrician may not possess. At Cutting Edge Design we specialize in this kind of wiring design, installation, and equipment integration exclusively.
Understanding structured wire types and which wires are designed for what purpose is fundamental to the successful wiring of a home. Effectively terminating and connecting unique wire types is critical to structured wiring and requires an extensive understanding of the specific role each wire type plays in the overall residential electronics system design. Understanding and integrating the functionality provided by structured wiring is paramount and critical since structured wiring ultimately requires the connection of wire to expensive and sophisticated equipment. It needs to be done right from the beginning….
